Nutrition Care FAQs

Learn what a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist does, the types of health and nutrition concerns that may benefit from nutrition care, and whether our services may be right for you.

An RD or RDN is a nationally credentialed food and nutrition professional who has completed accredited education and supervised practice, passed the national registration examination, and maintains continuing professional education.

This training prepares RDs and RDNs to provide evidence-based care grounded in nutrition science.

RD and RDN are two names for the same credential and may be used interchangeably.

The RD and RDN credentials confirm that a professional has met established requirements for education, supervised practice, examination, and continuing education.

The title “nutritionist” by itself does not confirm standardized training, credentials, or authorization to provide medical nutrition therapy. Qualifications can vary, so it is important to review them individually. The RD or RDN credential identifies a professional who has met nationally established standards for nutrition practice.

Care is tailored to your medical needs, food preferences, culture, routines, and what is realistically manageable in your everyday life.

Yes. Under California law, a referral and signed written order from a healthcare provider authorized to prescribe dietary treatment are required before medical nutrition therapy can begin. The order should include your medical diagnosis and either a treatment objective or diet order.

To make this step easier, your provider can send the required documentation directly by following the instructions on the for providers page. If anything is missing, we’ll let you know. All required documentation must be on file before your first appointment.

The Saloni Nutrition supports adolescents beginning at age 13, adults, and older adults. Care is tailored to each person’s age, life stage, health needs, routines, and support system.

For clients under 18, a parent or legal guardian will be involved as appropriate.

The Saloni Nutrition may be a good fit if you want evidence-based, personalized, and judgment-free nutrition care. We take time to understand your health, culture, food preferences, routines, challenges, and goals so that recommendations feel practical and sustainable.

If your needs fall outside our services, we will be transparent and help direct you to an appropriate resource when possible.

Our Approach FAQs

Learn how we combine nutrition science with your health history, culture, preferences, routines, and goals to create care that feels practical and personal.

Care begins with understanding you—not simply your diagnosis or what you eat. We consider your health history, nutrition needs, culture, preferences, routines, challenges, and goals.

Using evidence-based nutrition science, we work together to create practical steps that fit your everyday life. Your plan is monitored and adjusted as your needs and progress change.

Not automatically. Depending on your health needs, recommendations may include meal ideas, flexible structure, or a therapeutic eating plan.

When specific dietary changes are medically necessary, we will explain why they are recommended and help adapt them to your preferences, culture, and routine. The goal is to create a plan you can realistically follow—not to expect perfect eating.

No. Nutrition care does not have to focus on weight loss.

Your goals may include improving blood sugar, supporting digestive or heart health, meeting your nutrition needs, managing a medical condition, improving energy, or feeling more confident about food. If weight change is one of your goals, we can discuss it respectfully and without judgment.

Recommendations are based on your health history, medical needs, medications, laboratory results when available, food preferences, culture, schedule, budget, cooking abilities, and personal goals.

We will work together to decide what feels realistic. Your plan can be adjusted as your health, circumstances, and priorities change.

Yes. Medical nutrition therapy may involve targeted dietary changes.

Whenever possible, we focus on what can be added, adjusted, or substituted while preserving nutritional adequacy, cultural foods, flexibility, and enjoyment. If a restriction is medically necessary, we will explain its purpose and help you find practical alternatives.

Every dietitian and nutrition-care experience are different. You are encouraged to share what did and did not work for you, what felt difficult, and what you would like to approach differently.

We will use that experience to shape care around your needs, preferences, and pace. If we determine that another provider would better support you, we will be transparent and help direct you to an appropriate resource when possible.

Getting Started & Appointment FAQs

Learn how to begin care, prepare for your first visit, and what to expect from initial and follow-up appointments.

Yes. The Saloni Nutrition is currently accepting new patients throughout California. Telehealth appointments are available statewide, and patients in the Bay Area may choose in-person appointments at our Campbell location.

Yes. We offer a complimentary 15-minute discovery call to answer general questions, briefly discuss what you are looking for, and help determine whether our services may be a good fit.

The discovery call is not a clinical appointment and does not include an assessment, medical nutrition therapy, or individualized nutrition recommendations.

Submit an appointment request through the website, where you can select an available date and time and choose an online or in-person visit.

Once we receive your request, we will initiate the intake process within 2 business days. You will receive the required forms through Practice Better, our secure client portal. Please complete all forms before your appointment.

You will receive intake, health history, consent, and practice-policy forms through Practice Better. You may also be asked to provide:

  • A referral or medical order
  • Insurance information
  • Relevant medical records
  • Recent laboratory results
  • A current medication and supplement list

A referral and written medical order must be on file before medical nutrition therapy can be provided. Your healthcare provider may submit these documents directly to The Saloni Nutrition. Referral requirements and submission instructions are available on the for provider page.

Your initial appointment includes a comprehensive review of your medical history, nutrition concerns, eating patterns, medications, lifestyle, culture, routines, and goals. Together, we will identify priorities and develop practical first steps.

During follow-up appointments, we will review your progress, discuss challenges or changes, answer questions, and adjust your nutrition plan based on any health and medical changes as needed.

Initial nutrition appointments are approximately 60 minutes. Follow-up appointments are approximately 45 minutes.

The frequency and length of care depend on your health needs, goals, progress, and insurance coverage.

We will discuss a recommended follow-up schedule after your initial assessment and adjust it as your needs change.

Complete your assigned Practice Better forms before the appointment and upload any requested referrals, insurance, laboratory results, medical records, or medication and supplement lists.

You may also write down questions or concerns you would like to discuss. You do not need to track your food intake unless you are specifically asked to do so.

Yes. With your permission, a family member, caregiver, or other support person may participate when their involvement would support your care.

For clients under age 18, a parent or legal guardian will be involved as appropriate. The preferred level of participation can be discussed before the appointment.

Insurance & Payment FAQs

Learn how insurance benefits are verified, what costs may apply, and what payment options are available.

The Saloni Nutrition currently accepts [INSURANCE PLAN NAMES].

Coverage can vary between plans offered by the same insurance company. We recommend verifying your specific nutrition benefits before beginning care.

You can ask The Saloni Nutrition to verify your benefits or contact your insurance company yourself.

Option 1: Have us verify your benefits -> Clicking on this should open a link to my EMR

Option 2: Verify your benefits yourself

No. Benefit verification is an estimate based on information provided by your insurance company at that time. It is not a guarantee of coverage or payment.

Your insurance company makes the final determination after processing the claim. You are responsible for any deductible, copay, coinsurance, denied claim, or noncovered service assigned to you by your plan.

Depending on your plan, you may be responsible for:
  • A deductible that must be met before coverage begins
  • A fixed copay for each appointment
  • Coinsurance based on a percentage of the allowed charge
  • Services excluded or not covered by your plan

Your final responsibility is determined by your insurance company after it processes the claim.

We will review the claim and correct or resubmit it when appropriate. You are responsible for any amount your insurance company assigns to you, including denied or noncovered services.

You may contact your insurance company directly if you disagree with its coverage decision.

Yes. Self-pay is available for patients who do not have insurance coverage or prefer not to use insurance.

Visit the self-pay options section of our Insurance & Fees page to review current rates and appointment details.

When appropriate, we can provide a superbill for you to submit to your insurance company for possible out-of-network reimbursement. A superbill does not guarantee reimbursement.

A payment card is securely maintained through Practice Better and may be used for:
  • Deductibles, copays, or coinsurance
  • Self-pay appointments
  • Late-cancellation or missed-appointment fees

Your card will be handled according to the payment authorization and practice policies provided during intake.

Yes. HSA and FSA cards may generally be used for eligible nutrition services, including self-pay appointments, deductibles, copays, and coinsurance.

Because eligibility rules vary, contact your HSA or FSA administrator if you are unsure whether a particular service qualifies.

Find brief answers about cancellations, missed appointments, late arrivals, and communicating with the practice.

Appointments canceled or rescheduled at least 24 hours in advance will not incur a fee.

Appointments canceled or rescheduled with less than 24 hours’ notice are subject to a $50 late-cancellation fee. Missed appointments or no-shows are subject to the full appointment fee.

Insurance does not cover late-cancellation or no-show fees. Any applicable fee will be charged to the payment card on file.
